This is the principle behind my Phonics & Emotional Literacy Booklets, a series of seven printable workbooks that bring together synthetic phonics practice and the development of emotional intelligence in a single, accessible resource for parents and early years teachers.

Synthetic Phonics and Emotional Literacy: Why Teaching Them Together is Key
Each booklet in the series covers one sound group from the Jolly Phonics® synthetic phonics sequence. The synthetic phonics approach does not begin with the alphabet or with whole words. It starts with individual letter sounds, taught in a specific sequence, so that as soon as a few sounds are learned, children can:
- Look at a word
- Say the sound of each letter
- Blend those sounds to pronounce the whole word
This blending process — called synthesising — is a foundational decoding skill. It empowers children to work out unfamiliar words independently, rather than relying on visual memorisation. A practical tip that supports this process: encourage children to count each sound on their fingers as they blend. This physical anchor helps them understand how many sounds make up a word while relying on their body movements during the learning process.
What makes these booklets distinctive is the second layer woven into every letter sound: an emotional conversation. Each story is designed not only to embed the target phoneme through repeated exposure in context but also to open a moment of genuine connection between adult and child around feelings, experiences, and imagination.
